AirTags and Bluetooth trackers
Coin-sized tags meant for keys are routinely used to track cars and bags.

Small tags like AirTags can be hidden in cars and bags to follow you. If your phone warns about an unknown tracker, take it seriously. Removing one tells the owner you found it.
How it works
AirTags, Tiles, and similar trackers report their position through every passing phone of the same ecosystem. Hidden in a car, coat lining, bag, stroller, or gift, they give whoever registered them a location trail. Phones now warn about unknown trackers travelling with you — iPhones alert automatically for AirTags; Android has 'unknown tracker alerts' — but coverage across brands is incomplete and alerts can take hours.
Where to look — checking changes nothing
- Take 'unknown tracker travelling with you' alerts seriously; the phone can make the tracker play a sound to help locate it.
- Common hiding places found in real cases: under car bumpers, in wheel wells, behind license plates, inside seat cushions, in bags and children's toys.
- iPhone: Find My app → Items → 'Identify Found Item' can read a found tracker and show its serial number and the owner's partial phone number.
- A found tracker's serial number can matter to police reports — photographing it before anything else preserves that.
Before changing anything: what it would reveal
Disabling or discarding a found tracker tells the person watching that you found it — and its last reported location. Some people, especially with an advocate or police involved, choose to leave a tracker in place (or move it somewhere uninteresting) while planning; removing it is not automatically the safest move. This is exactly the kind of decision worth making with support.
